Martin Wellness Center Begins ‘No Contact Boxing’ Program

Posted

The Wellness Center in Martin has begun a new program for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease. This program is called “Rock Steady Boxing”, and helps these individuals to work on balance and coordination as well as bilateral movements, to help combat the disease.

Parkinson’s Disease is a common condition that affects the nervous system. Some symptoms of this disease include tremors, stiffness, and slow body movements. There is currently no cure for Parkinson’s Disease, but there are many ways to help improve quality of life, such as therapy and exercising.

This program has recently been brought to The Wellness Center, and is led by Laura Taylor, who is certified to teach the class.

“The purpose of the program is to give them their own community,” Taylor said.

On top of learning balance and coordination, Taylor also helps with voice projection as well as many other things, as the attendees are boxing. They also do activities other than no contact boxing that help with gaining strength back.

“We want to help give them their life back,” Taylor said.

This class is currently taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2PM at The Wellness Center in Martin. The classes are $25 on top of the membership fee. Anyone interested in participating can sign up for a membership in person at The Wellness Center.
