As Early Voting Ends, County Alderman/Mayoral Race Takes Lead

Thursday, August 1 is voting day for this year’s Aug 1 State Primary and County General Election. The early voting report showed Weakley Countians early voting turnout at 15.46%

With those ballots being counted and positions being certified soon, Weakley Countians are now looking to the general election, November 5, where not only will Weakley Countians be voting for their next President of the United States (Donald Trump versus Kamala Harris), but also for their own mayors and alderman.

During this years election, Gleason, Greenfield and Sharon all have a mayoral seat to vie for. The mayoral seat term is two-weeks. All 5 city municipalities will be electing aldermen to a four-year term.

The petition deadline for these seats is August 15 at 12:00 p.m. noon.

Those who have picked up their qualifying petitions thus far include Ralph Cobb, alderman for Dresden, Kenneth Moore, alderman for Dresden and Willie Parker, alderman for Dresden. While Parker has picked up his petition, the petition has not been filed with the election office yet.

Charles Anderson is the only candidate so far for Mayor of Gleason. Those who have picked up petitions for aldermen in Gleason include Mike Bennett (not turned in), Wade Cook (not turned in) L. Shawn Francisco (not turned in), James Hines and Mike Stafford.

Cindy McAdams has picked up her qualifying petition for Mayor of Greenfield-no other candidates have picked up for this position. Thise who have picked up petitions for Greenfield aldermen include Brad Borneman (not filed), Ray Ann Ewing (not filed), Donald Ray High (not filed) and Becky Strawn (not filed).

Two people have picked up aldermen petitions for the city of Martin including Marvin Flatt (not filed) and Randy Edwards (not filed).

Two have picked up petitions for the city of Sharon mayor position including current mayor Donna Stricklin and Larry A. Stone. Neither has filed their qualifying petition yet.

For aldermen in Sharon, two people have picked up but not filed their petitions, Stewart Broussard and Wanda Hamlin.

Voters can cast their ballot at the Weakley County Election Commission office, 135 S. Poplar St., Ste. A, Dresden or the Martin City Masonic Lodge, 7900 Hwy. 45 S, Martin. Both locations will be open from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and from 8:30 a.m. until noon on Saturdays.

Early voting for the general election will start October 16 and run through October 31.
