The city of Dresden held a special-called meeting on Monday, September 16 in order to fill an alderman vacancy left by Dale Hutcherson when he was sworn in as the new mayor of Weakley County. The alderman seat is temporary until the November 5 election.
Dresden mayor Mark Maddox stated that Kenneth Gatewood was on the ballot for alderman in the last municipal election in 2022.
“He’s been in Dresden for a very long time. He graduated from Palmersville and is a desert storm veteran and worked for many years at Volunteer Trucking,” Maddox said.
Maddox said that he called Gatewood personally to see if he wanted to serve since he was on the ballot for this past election.
“It would be an honor,” Gatewood responded.
Maddox recommended to the board that they appoint Gatewood to the board of alderman to fill the vacancy.
The board voted unanimously to appoint Gatewood. He will serve until the election results are certified, which usually happens a week after an election is held.
Gatewood is not on the ballot for this year’s election; however, former alderman and mayor candidate Lyndal Dilday is on the ballot along with Benita Evans and Jennifer Reddick Schlicht.
