Pride Month: How to Help Prevent Suicide by Being an Ally

Posted

Each June,  we recognize Pride Month, an occasion to acknowledge and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Members of the LGBTQ+ community, however, are still disproportionately at risk for suicide and suicidal ideation.

According to statistics from The Trevor Project, “more than 1.8 million LGBTQ+ young people (ages 13-24) seriously consider suicide each year in the U.S. – and at least one attempts suicide every 45 seconds.”  Thankfully, there are resources available to those contemplating suicide or suicidal ideation, and there are LGBTQ+-specific resources as well.

One such resource is the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. This designated number offers trained counselors to help 24 hours, seven days a week. There is even a direct line to LGBTQ+-trained counselors that is accessible by dialing 988 and pressing three or texting the word PRIDE to 988. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline states that affirming their identity, using their pronouns, and being an active part of creating an anti-oppressive, gender-affirming space are just some ways to practice being an ally and potentially saving a life. This Pride month, practice your awareness and allyship. Who knows? It just may save a life.

The Jason Foundation is another available resource.  The Jason Foundation is dedicated to the awareness and prevention of youth suicide through educational programs that equip youth, parents, educators, and the community with the tools and resources to identify and assist at-risk youth. Many times, a young person will exhibit clear warnings signs prior to an attempt. By knowing the warning signs, and knowing how to help, you could save a life.  Visit The Jason Foundation’s website to learn more about youth suicide, the warning signs, and how you can help make a difference.  The Jason Foundation has never charged a school, community, or individual for the use of their programs or resources.  Visit their website to find the closest affiliate office to you. https://jasonfoundation.com/about-us/locations/
