Local author Pam Watts Harris will discuss her recently published book entitled Learning to Live with Vision Loss at an upcoming event sponsored by the Friends the Library (FOL) group at Martin Public Library. All interested persons are welcome to attend this free event on Saturday, August 10, from 10 – 11:30 a.m. at the library.

Retired educator and author Harris will share resources, tips, and strategies for those living with vision loss and for their family and friends. After becoming legally blind in 2020 due to advanced myopic macular degeneration, Harris found herself unable to do many of the things she once loved to do.  This book chronicles her journey to acceptance as she shares information about the techniques and skills she acquired to help her live a more independent and fulfilling life.

Activities for the event will include a brief overview of the book, a question-and-answer session, a book signing, and the opportunity to talk with representatives of The STAR Center, the Northwest Tennessee Human Resource Agency Transportation Services, and the Gateway Senior Citizen Center.

Refreshments and door prizes are also a part of this interesting and educational event

Friends of the Library president Laura Plunk stated: “We’re thrilled to announce that Pam, our very own author and FOL member, has written a remarkable book, Learning to Live with Vision Loss. This promises to be an inspiring event.”

MPL Library director Katie Parr said: "We are very excited to host this program that covers such a needed topic for those in our community! We are grateful for Pam, who is a talented author as well as a vital part of our library's success. Pam has been an active member of The Friends of the Martin Public Library and has served on the board of the Martin Public Library Foundation for many years and will soon be stepping into the role of President of the Foundation Board in August."

FOL members are working closely with Harris and Parr to make sure all attending this event leave with more knowledge about vision and coping with vision loss.

Other local authors who have been featured at recent Friends of the Library and MPL events include Erin Chesnut, David Johnson, and Merry Brown. Romance author Laura Trentham, who grew up in Martin, has also given a program.
