Delmond Named to Tom E. Hendrix Chair of Excellence
Dr. Anthony Delmond has been chosen to serve as the chairholder of the Tom E. Hendrix Chair of Excellence in Free Enterprise at the University of Tennessee at Martin. The position was previously held by Dr. Tommy Cates, who retired in December 2023.
Delmond is a native of Gainesville, Florida, and earned his Ph.D. in economics from Washington State University after earning his Master of Science degree in economic history from the London School of Economics and his bachelor’s degrees in English and economics from the University of North Florida.
He is an associate professor of agricultural economics at UT Martin, where he has been teaching since 2018. He will become an associate professor of economics when he assumes the Hendrix Chair on Jan. 1, 2025.
Delmond’s research interests primarily focus on aspects of consumer behavior, trade and development, particularly in the area of food and wine marketing.
“Dr. Delmond has been selected through a national search and from a pool of highly qualified applicants,” said Dr. Ahmad Tootoonchi, dean of the College of Business and Global Affairs. “After interviewing the top four candidates, the search committee strongly and unanimously recommended Dr. Delmond to become the next director of the Hendrix Chair of Excellence while holding an associate professor rank as a faculty of economics.”
The Tom E. Hendrix Chair of Excellence in Free Enterprise is one of Tennessee’s Chairs of Excellence. It was established to promote a better understanding of the nation’s economic system and provide entrepreneurship opportunities for students at UT Martin.
The Tom E. Hendrix Chair of Excellence is named for UTM graduate and Selmer businessman Tom Hendrix. Its establishment was announced Jan. 7, 1985, by Gov. Lamar Alexander.
The Hendrix Chair, a position in the College of Business and Global Affairs, supports free enterprise through the development of students in entrepreneurship and leadership at the collegiate and the high school levels. This includes working with students who are interested in starting their own companies.
The chairholder contributes to the promotion and development of free enterprise-oriented economic education in the state, region and nation through scholarly leadership and productivity.
