City of Greenfield Police Department Promotes Two Officers

The city of Greenfield Police Department promoted two officers. Brad Hardin was appointed as the Assistant Police Chief and Kathy Whitman was promoted to Sergeant at Greenfield’s September board meeting held on Tuesday, September 10.

“Both officers have been a great asset to the Department since I’ve come and taken over. I would like to personally thank these two officers for their hard work and their dedication,” Police Chief Brian Legons stated.

The city also passed the second reading of an ordinance to increase court costs. The increase will go from the current $100 to $130. The ordinance will have to go through three readings and a public hearing before final adoption.

Fire Chief Bob Dudley stated that on September 18 at 6:30 p.m. the department will have a “Push-In” ceremony where the firemen make a push apparatus at the fire department.

Police Chief Brian Legons presented to the board that the Violent Crimes Grant that the department received last year was used for some radios, body cameras, in-car cameras and also cloud storage for the cameras.

“When I took over in March, I started trying to work with this company to get these cameras up and going and we’re here in September,” Legons said.

Legons stated that the vendor he had been working with to install those had been very hard to work with and he asked the board for permission to sell the cameras and go with another vendor.

“Part of the price was they were supposed to set everything up and they were supposed to come install them in the cars. I’m not an electrician and I don’t want to start wiring in patrol cars,” Legons said.

Legons further stated that the department pays $4,600 a year for cloud storage which would start coming out of the budget next year for the cameras and Legons wanted to get away from that and wants the board to give him permission to sell those cameras and purchase new car cameras and body cameras.

Legons was unsure of what the total price would be, but said the cameras he was currently looking at were $150 per camera which gets downloaded to a server and the department buys a server which Legons states would be cheaper than $4,600 per year. Legons also stated that Garmin makes an in-car camera for $300 per camera with no recurring fees. Legons stated that he hoped to sell the current cameras to purchase the new ones and come out even.

The board approved the sale of the current cameras and when Legons has bids on the new ones they can go over that at a later date.

The Yard of the Month for September is Ronnie and Angela Henry on South Second Street.

Greenfield’s Front Street Festival is set for October 22-26th so be sure to come out to Greenfield and show your support.

The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be held on October 8 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
