Yellow Jackets go 3-1 with victory over Humboldt

Greenfield High School's football team topped visiting Humboldt 17-6 at Harris Field Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets employed an impressive ground game. Trae Mebane had 125 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Tyler Isbell rambled for 165 yards.

"We got a good win," said Greenfield coach Don Pitt. “I felt like, offensively, we moved the ball well all night long. Trey Mebane and Tyler Isbell carried us the whole game."

The Jackets could have made the margin more impressive had an early TD pass to Noah Brown not been called back.

Easton Sullivan completed over 65 percent of his passes and ran in a quarterback sneak from the 1 in the second half to help put distance between Greenfield and the Vikings.

Right before halftime, Kinser Pratt booted a 29-yard field goal to give Greenfield a 3-0 lead at intermission. The field goal was set up by a halfback pass from Landon Clark to Austin Griffin. Pratt also converted two extra points. Then, the Jackets turned it on the final frame.

"We won it late in the game," Pitt said. "I felt like we were ready to play in the fourth. We just turned it up."

Pitt said he was pleased with his team's defensive effort, especially in the secondary.

"Defensively, we had a lot of guys step up. Our corners Austin Griffin and freshman Jerry Foley had a big night," he said. "Isbell and Eli St. Romain, our two safeties, played well. We had a big night out of our secondary."

With the victory, Greenfield improves to 3-1 on the season which sets up next week's game at county rival Gleason, also 3-1. Gleason suffered a 48-8 setback to Union City Friday night.

"I feel like we're focused," said Pitt, looking ahead to Gleason. "We are trying to remind them and stress how bad the penalties and mistakes are hurting us. Gleason has a good team and I see it being a battle. I hope we do the best we can and have a good night.”

The Vikings tumble 0-4 and will visit the state-ranked Dresden Lions this Friday night. Dresden blanked Halls 62-0 on the road last Friday.
